If your bathtub enclosure only has a spout for filling the tub, you have more than one option for adding a shower. The simplest way is to fit a handheld shower hose directly over the tub spout; you should be able to find one with a removable boot so you can still use the spout when you want to take a bath. You can make a more permanent conversion with a handheld shower attachment. If you're really on a budget, you can even make a shower with a length of garden hose and a sprayer.

Unscrew the tub spout from the fitting to which it is attached using adjustable pliers. If you plan on reusing the spout, wrap a rag around it to avoid damaging it with the pliers.

Examine the fitting that remains after you remove the spout. It may be a 1/2- by 6-inch length of threaded pipe or a shorter one that barely extends past the wall. You can connect either a handheld shower attachment or a garden hose to either fitting, but if yours is 6 inches, you may prefer to replace it with a shorter one to make it less obvious.

Remove the 6-inch nipple by turning it counterclockwise with adjustable pliers. Screw in a 1/2- by 2-inch nipple and tighten it with an internal pipe wrench. This type of wrench fits inside the nipple and wedges against the inner walls when you rotate the handle clockwise.

Add a handheld shower by screwing the hose adapter that comes with the unit you purchased onto the nipple and tightening it with pliers. Screw the hose that is supplied with the unit to the adapter and screw the showerhead to the other end of the hose.

Install a 1/2-inch female pipe thread to 3/4-inch male hose thread adapter if you prefer to use a garden hose and sprayer for showers. Screw the adapter to the nipple and tighten it with pliers, then screw one end of the hose to the adapter and the other end to the sprayer.

Tip

• Wrap plumbing tape around the male threads of each connection to keep the connection watertight.
